Money market funds' siren song has become a little louder: With the timing of Federal Reserve rate cuts shaky, yields on cash are still hot – for now. Here's how to decide where and when to redeploy some of your idle cash into fixed income. Taxes are also a key consideration as you build out your fixed income sleeve. Interest income from Treasurys, meanwhile, is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local taxes. A gradual entry toward fixed income You don't have to build out your fixed income allocation in one day.

General Motors' Cruise self-driving vehicle unit will redeploy cars on U.S. roadways for the first time since October, beginning with a small fleet of human-driven vehicles in Phoenix, the company said Tuesday. Cruise said its "goal is to resume driverless operations," however it did not provide a timeline for doing so. The probe also investigated allegations of a coverup by Cruise leadership, but did not find any evidence to support those claims. Prior to the accident, Cruise was planning an aggressive expansion of robotaxis outside its home market, where the majority of its vehicles operated. In addition to the ceasing of operations, Cruise leadership has been gutted: Its cofounders, including CEO and cofounder Kyle Vogt, resigned and nine other leaders were ousted.

AI is emerging “as a great disruptor in the world of work,” Denis Machuel, chief executive of Adecco Group, said in a statement. Some 46% of executives said they would redeploy employees internally if their jobs were impacted by AI. Responses from more than 800 global companies showed that a quarter of them expected AI to cause job losses, while half thought the technology would create new jobs. The WEF said employers expected most technologies, including AI, to be “a net positive” for jobs over the following five years. Still, that offers little consolation to the workers AI has already helped push out.

There's a party happening in stocks in 2024, and though investors may be reluctant, it could be time to think of taking a few chips off the table. "I tell people we're not selling everything, but we need to give the portfolio the TLC it deserves – this is the fine-tuning of your portfolio," she added. Shortly after the opening bell, we will exit our position in Humana , selling 85 shares at roughly $388. Following the trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will no longer own shares in the managed care provider. Humana shares are falling in the premarket on a couple of negative updates that are meaningful enough to change our investment thesis — forcing us to sell the rest of our very small position. The reason behind the shortfall was higher-than-expected Medicare Advantage medical costs, driven by greater inpatient utilization and a further increase in outpatient surgery costs. Shortly before we first bought Humana in 2022, the company announced a similar shortfall to its Medicare Advantage growth.

Last year, banks opened 2023 by forecasting layoffs, including for the investment bankers who suddenly had nothing to do following the pandemic-era M&A and IPO boom. Citigroup kicked off 2024 ominously, warning that it will lay off as many as 20,000 employees by 2026. The bank expects 2024 expenses to increase further to total $90 billion, up $2.8 billion from 2023, and much of that will be focused on hiring. CFO Barnum on Friday said the bank is gearing up for a "rebound in the investment banking wallet." Headcount declined 3% to 80,006 from 82,427, while compensation expenses rose to $24.5 billion from $23 billion.

The deal, however, is hardly the stuff of unalloyed joy – for Palestinians or for Israel. And the deal arguably strengthens Hamas, allowing it to claim credit, catch its breath and regroup. But their voices were drowned by the strength of the hostages’ families. They simultaneously support the government’s aim of fighting Hamas so it can no longer threaten Israel. It’s a sign of a deep moral dilemma that will continue playing out in profound human suffering.

Shares of Broadcom (AVGO) came under pressure Tuesday, as investors likely cashed in after the stock surged to an all-time high. Shares of Broadcom fell more than 1% Tuesday, to around $983.70 apiece. VMWare shares fell around 4.5% Tuesday, to $143.20 each, bringing the company's stock closer to the cash-consideration level spelled out in the merger agreement . As a result of the transaction, Jim argued investors may eventually assign a higher earnings multiple to Broadcom stock, which could help boost its price over time. Ukraine reported Tuesday that its forces had established a foothold on the eastern bank of the river. The announcement could herald the start of an advance toward Russian-occupied Crimea, with Ukraine saying on Wednesday that it was starting to push back Russian forces. The Kherson area, in southern Ukraine, is partially occupied by Russian forces after an offensive to take the city of Kherson last year prompted Russian forces to withdraw to the eastern bank of the river. Russian forces are pummeling Ukrainian units that have have crossed over the Dnipro river to the Russian-occupied left (or eastern) bank of the river in Kherson, a Russian-installed official said Wednesday. "Additional forces have now been brought up," he said, claiming that Ukrainian forces were blocked in the village of Krynki where "a fiery hell" awaited them.

As the end of the year approaches, investors are likely to be reviewing their portfolios and considering which stocks to sell to harvest tax losses. Tax-loss harvesting is a strategy to offset capital gains tax from stocks that have run up in share price with losses from non-performing stocks. To aid investors, Scotiabank identified several stocks on Canada's TSX Composite index that are down significantly this year but are still rated as "Sector Outperform" by its analysts. "These are prime candidates to keep long-term exposure to despite recent weakness," said Scotiabank analysts led by Hugo Ste-Marie in a note to clients on Nov. 13. Scotiabank pointed out that the top 20 stocks in the S & P 500 index are up significantly this year, while the remaining 480 stocks are showing losses on average.

Tax loss harvesting is a staple of year-end planning. Bonds are ripe for tax loss harvesting in the wake of the Federal Reserve's rate-hiking cycle. Consider that the longer-dated iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) has a year-to-date total return of about -7.3%, while the shorter-term iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) has a total return of roughly 0.7% in 2023, according to Morningstar. "Tax loss harvesting is a silver lining for some of the pain they've been feeling the last couple of years." In fact, as other long-term trends take hold, many of these working-class roles are poised for a job explosion. While manufacturing jobs as a whole are expected to stay flat, spending in this industry has boomed to $200 billion each year, tripling in the past five years. "What characterizes the physical labor jobs that are safe for the next five or 10 years are things that are in an unpredictable physical environment," Kweilin Ellingrud, a McKinsey Global Institute director, told me. Instead of replacing these jobs, AI will likely benefit specific roles by making it easier to do the most routine parts of the job. He added: "There are these jobs that are in a middle ground where the physical work may remain but the supervision might be more exposed."

Intesa has among core shareholders charitable banking foundations inspired by Catholic values, commonly referred to in Italy as "Catholic finance". "I hope to have the honour to continue to lead our company for many years with this philosophy," Messina said. At the helm since 2013, Messina has made the digital switch a key plank of his long-term strategy for Intesa, with a view to cutting costs and focusing resources on wealth management and insurance operations. When the Veralto spinoff from Danaher was completed earlier this month, shareholders like us received one VLTO share for every three shares of DHR owned. Recall that in Danaher's earnings report, third-quarter results for the Environmental & Applied Solutions outpaced expectations for both sales and operating income. On Thursday's call, CFO Sameer Ralhan said Veralto implemented some cost optimizations in the third quarter that will start delivering benefits in the ongoing fourth quarter. Other notable dynamics in Veralto's third quarter include free cash flow generation coming in at 113% of GAAP earnings (which was higher than adjusted earnings at 83 cents per share). Finally, Veralto expects to initiate a quarterly dividend of 9 cents per share in the fourth quarter.

Time is ripe for another push on carbon pricing
  + stars: | 2023-10-24 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +8 min
Other technologies, such as green hydrogen and carbon capture, are still a long way from maturity. Around 50 countries have some form of carbon price, double the number 10 years ago, and another 23 countries are planning to introduce one. The snag is that China’s carbon price is low and the United States doesn’t have a federal levy. Others argue that governments should combine carbon pricing with financial support for the most vulnerable and targeted subsidies for fledgling technologies. To hit climate targets, the carbon price would need to be $135 a tonne in advanced economies and $45 a tonne in large emerging ones by 2030.

The S & P 500 closed at its bear market low a year ago Thursday — ending Oct. 12, 2022, at its lowest close since November 2020 . In hindsight, that dramatic turnaround was the start of a rally that saw the S & P 500 climb 22% from the close on Oct. 12, 2022, through Wednesday. Palo Alto Networks, meanwhile, has successfully pivoted to profitability, joining the S & P 500 as a result, and repeatedly demonstrated the quality of its cybersecurity platform. Indeed, an exchange-traded fund that gives each S & P 500 constituent the same influence — the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF — has advanced only 11.2% since Oct. 12, 2022. Viewed through the top-heavy rally lens, though, it's not a surprise to see a number of Club stocks underperforming the S & P 500.

Failure to secure the cash they need at rates they can afford, could lead to insolvencies and layoffs. "I think we're now starting to finally see the fall of some of the zombies," she added. This can include restructuring loan repayments, offering reduced rates or other more relaxed terms and can help banks avoid loan write-offs. "Banks and private equity shops have waited to see if the tide turned but higher rates don't allow hiding anymore."
